Posts: 5 (08/17/05 20:20:53) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Anyone else besides me a little worried about some of the decisions Singer's making with the new Superman movie? I mean...the whole "Lois has a child with another man out of wedlock" thing kind of has me worried. Also, the statement Singer made once about not really reading the comics much...just liking the movies. I think that if you're gonna make a movie about a specific character, you have to be true to the character's roots. Superman's roots are in comics. The Donner movie, while great, was based on pre Crisis Superman. Things have changed in 27 years, you know? Just a few concerns I have. Anyone else?

Singer is not particularly a Superman fan but a fan of Donner's Superman the Movie. He is most likely more concern with just extending the storyline of what Donner has started than doing a story that shows his love for the characters. From what I have seen so far, it does not look promising......

And honestly, at the end of the day, do we REALLY need another "traditional" Superman movie, where Lois ONLY loves Superman, and nothing EVER changes? Using the Donner flick as a loose framework allows so much more. Screw the comics. Donner did. __________________ "Yet MORE hypocrisy from a Superman Cinema poster. Stop the presses."

I totally agree that he cares for the character at least on the level of the media he's concerned with. But the level he's concerned with isn't the base, the root, the foundation. To be true to a character, you need to be in contact with that. I read almost all the Superman books and I don't think that's DC's scared to shake things up a bit. The whole Identity Crisis promises to take what we know and perceive and throw it on its ear. And I'm all down with that. I'm not even really that concerned with the Lois/child thing from the movie. I AM concerned with Singer getting too wrapped up in pre crisis movie Superman. When the Superman movie came out, it was fairly faithful to the comic. Pa Kent had died, Lex was kind of campy and silly, Superman could do damn near anything he wanted. Donner didn't "screw the comic" at all. The movie was quite accurate at its time. But NOW, things aren't the same. In the mid 80's, John Byrne modified his origin in a way that makes him more accessable and believable (to me at least). Clark developed his slightly less god like powers over time. He was always Clark, but he uses the guise of Superman to protect his family. Clark is the person, Superman is the mask (Quentin Tarantino can suck my ass for that pre crisis crap he put in Kill Bill volume 2). Luthor is very cold and calculating, and not a BIT silly. Ma and Pa Kent are fine and dandy. I guess the point of this long rant is that if Singer wants to make a faithful sequel to Donner's film, that's fine by me, but it won't be nearly as accurate with today's version of the hero. Which is the version I prefer. I'm sure that whatever movie he gives us will be great. I love the casting job, the costume looks pretty cool in motion, and it will be AWESOME to see Superman on the big screen again. I'm just hoping for a more modern version.

For example, Clark worked in a TV station, not the Daily Planet. About the John Byrne revamp, many (including me) dislike that aproach, the "Clark Kent is who I am, Superman is what I can do". That makes no sense if you really think about it. In a nutshell, it's like the story of the ugly duck. He grew up as a duck, surrounded by ducks, but he wasn't a duck and just found happiness when he found out what he really was. The same with Superman. He's not human, he grew up as one, has human values, but he's not Clark Kent, mild mannered reporter, who uses glasses (his mask) to hide who he really is - a Kryptonian, with human values yes, but with great powers. And DC changed Superman's origin again, in Birthright, bringing him closer to how he was in Pre-Crisis and in the Donner film(s). So it's a moot point really. I believe nothing but good things will happen with the Superman brand when "Superman Returns" is released. IN SINGER WE TRUST

First is that it seems pretty naive to me to think that a child born with superpowers would behave or mind his parents worth a damn. If you can't make him mind, it'd be hard as hell to ingrain in him the values and attitudes that Superman has stood for for so long. Imagine if a 5 or 6 year old boy with superman's powers threw a temper tantrum over a toy or something his parents didn't want him to do. It makes more sense to me for him to get his powers gradually like the whole "living solar battery" thing. The second reason I like post crisis Superman more is because like him, I wasn't raised by my biological parents. I wasn't adopted like him, but my grandparents raised me. I may have received my genetic makeup from my parents (who wanted nothing to do with me), but the values and beliefs I have, my sense of right and wrong...they were given to me by my grandparents who took me in when they didn't have to. It's sort of a whole...nature versus nurture thing. I'm a big supporter of the nurture part of that. There are dozens of rediculously powerful superheroes in the Marvel, DC, and various independent universes. Even more who are aliens from another planets. And quite a few whose home worlds' have been destroyed....but only one Superman. He's a superhero. THE superhero. The fact that he's Kryptonian might make him powerful, but the upbringing and care Ma and Pa Kent gave him make him a hero. He can do anything he wants, and he chooses to do right. Wolverine or Batman or "moody hero of the month" fans don't quite get that. But I do. Bottom line for me is that if Singer stays true to that, I don't give a damn whether it's pre crisis Superman, Post Crisis Superman, Birthright Superman, All Star Superman, or whatever. I'll just be glad to see it.

Lois has been unfaithful and abusive to Clark in the post-Crisis comics (Jeb Friedman, anyone? Or perhaps Lois' repeated attempts to ditch Clark from 2001-2004?). Compared to that, a Lois who gets involved with another man during a period where Superman's apparently gone for good and only resurfaces years later is nothing. Comic book Lois was messing around with Jeb just barely after Clark was entombed, and kept seeing him even after Clark came back and dumped Clark for him in the most hateful and mean-spirited way possible. Not that it matters. There's been so much selfish backbiting, bashing, and screaming and yelling over Superman Returns that I don't give a damn about the movie anymore. If the fanbase wants to cement this as the new Catwoman (ti's already got just as much if not more bad buzz), they can have at it.They've already disowned Superman history prior to 1986 (I've seen countless attacks on Siegel and Shuster, accusing them of getting Superman all wrong and claiming that Byrne "saved" Superman from their ineptitude) and booted out anyone who doesn't follow their party line, so I guess this isn't anything new. I like MUCH of Brynes revamp but its RIDDLED with problems...several inconsistancies. The birthing matrix...not even Lois & Clark used that piece of overcomplcated tripe..and there's a reason.
