Biggest surprise in comics? |

This is probably a lame answer, but since I don't read much else other than Superman, Batman or the Flash, my biggest surprise ever was when the Cyborg was revealed to be Hank Henshaw.

eh...not really for me. I was about 8 at the time, and just gotten into comics, because of the death of superman storyline. But since i was just starting, i had no idea who he was. I have since learned who he was and read the comics pertaining to him. But at the time it was no shocker to me, on account of not knowing who he was.

My biggest surprise is that the character deaths that have stayed intact, i.e. no lame "he wasn't really dead, so he came back" story line.
For example, Barry Allen and Jason Todd. Sure, Todd was hinted at in Hush, but thank god they didn't fuck it up. It gives more weight to the characters affected when another character stays dead. Kinda like the scene between Capt. America and Batman in JLA/Avengers. They had both lost partners, so they shared a small bond. Little things like that exploration of character are far more interesting to me as a reader than whatever Magna/Anime looking-inspired-superduper cosmic villian they come up with. Another example, death of Sam Lane and death of Diana's mom. (Maxima as well, cuz damn she was hot for a picture.) As long as they're not fucked up, they can still be useful for developing your main characters. I'm surprised that nobody has fucked up yet with a lame comeback-from-the-dead story. But Death of Superman and the return stories had some serious fallout. Coast City and Hal Jordan anyone? Anyway, rant over. "The man of tomorrow is forged by his battles today." -- Lex Luthor

Hack, agree wholeheartedly on the Hal Jordan thing...HOWEVER...
If my sources are correct (and they almost always are...) Expect Hal Jordan to be back by the end of the summer. As Green Lantern. I shit you not. I don't know how they're gonna do this, and I'm not sure I like the idea, BUT... BUT... BUT... There's a light at the end of that tunnel. Who would WRITE a Hal Jordan GL book if they brought him back? The rumour mill tells me...none other than Grant Fucking Morrison. GRANT FUCKING MORRISON writing Hal Jordan: Green Lantern!!!!!! ummm...can anybody say "Best thing DC has done in 10 years?" Just a rumour... __________________

Barry Allen's come back from the dead tons of times. Not literally, but they've found ways to bring him back, like thru time travel.

Wait, I thought the GLC was destroyed and Kyle was the only GL??? Aw, fuck it. It's too complicated. Isn't Hal the new Spectre?

yes, yes, yes, and yes. You're both right.
But I mean, I think they're gonna find a way to REALLY bring Hal back. If there was ANYBODY other than Grant Morrison behind it, I'd say NAY. However...if this is true, and it IS in fact gonna be Morrison pulling the strings...the guy can do no wrong. __________________

Well didnt the Spectre comics come to an end? I heard Hal was going to come back for a couple months now. My best friend is a big GL fan. I remember him telling me about an Green Arrow comic where CA has Hals ring, and i believe somehow GA is going to brought into this somehow. I cant remember for sure what my friend heard, i'll have to ask him again.

Not the biggest surprise, I'm sure, but probably the most memorable was that first look at Mary Jane Watson. Good thing Ditko left!

Re: Biggest surprise in comics? | ||

i have a few
1) Jason Todd (or so we thought) at the near end of the Hush storyline. i wasnt reading batman on a regular basis yet. i was reading that in the store, and about wet my pants. obviously, we found out later it wasnt really him...but in that story, i wouldnt have been upset 2) Hal Jordan losing it and going crazy. Several of his story lines threw me off guard. I was actually a big fan of his...and hated kyle rayner...for a while. I love kyle now....you actually feel for his character. although bringing back hal would be awesome 3) They final (most recent) supergirl storyline. several twists there. swapping places...that caught me off guard. good for the story line 4) Finding out Superboy is a half clone of lex luthor. WOW i'm sure i've got more...but those are ones that come to mind |

I don't think it has anything to do with admitting they were "wrong", as Kyle has his supporters (myself among them). I mean, as far as I'm concerned, they've done what they've done with Hal, and they should keep it that way.
BUT...Morrison can make me buy just about anything. __________________

I LIKE Kyle...but Jordan got shafted. It was just WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY out of character for the so called "brightest of the lanterns with the strongest will."
Hal broke when so many other heroes have been put in similar desperate situations? If they wanted to replace Hal why not let him die on duty? That's because DC wanted a backdoor to bring him back if Rayner didn't go over. |

Finding out Lex had spent some time in Smallville "back in the day," which meant he probably could put the Clark/Superman connection together yet chooses not to out of ego.

Re: Luthor | ||

That was an old Eliot Maggin thing. He implied in his books that since Lex/Clark/Superboy were so close in Smallville, that there's NO WAY that someone as brilliant as Lex couldn't figure this out.
He just REFUSES to accept it. Why? Because to him it means that he's been outsmarted by an "inferior". So he buries it. He goes to outrageous lengths to deny it to himself. __________________

Sounds a bit like a certain Latverian tyrant.
Coast City getting nuked...I didn't see it coming. If it hadn't been @#%$ up I think the revalation of MONARCH'S identity would have been one of the biggest shocks in comics. |

Re: Luthor | ||

I'd have loved to see that explored in the comics I have. Only once was it bought up with Lex' "Super computer" deducing that CK is Supes, but Lex just doesn't buy it.
Remember that awful Lois and Clark ep where some computer deduced that Jimmy Olsen was Superman? |

Re: Luthor | ||

The lastest issue of New Avengers (#7) was pretty darned cool.
Let me set this up, a few years ago, a character was found (created by Stan Lee and Artie Rosen) that predated Fantastic Four #1. He was called the Sentry and was pretty Superman-like although there are major differences. Anyway, Paul Jenkins wrote a mini-series about the Sentry, incorporating some of the old artwork found. It was a pretty cool series...problem was that it was a hoax. There never was a character predating the FF #1, it was an elaborate marketing plan that was pulled off! Anyway, to now, the New Avengers form and find the Sentry in a prison that houses supervillians. They find that he pretty much is there on his own, punishing himself for killing his wife (seemingly accidently). The New Avengers want to know his story. Now issue #7 comes along and the Avenger confront the Sentry in the prison. Not only do they bring along his wife (who is NOT dead) but they bring along Paul Jenkins! They say Paul created the Sentry for a comic book so...who the hell are you!?!? Great cliff hanger...can't wait till issue #8! |

I rmember that. HUGE April fools gag, although I never believed it. Cool that they are doing a kind of wink wink real world parody story with him.

Yeah, it's interesting. I never read that initial Sentry mini. I should pick up the trade, since it's supposed to be damn good.
